What Does It Take to Fix a Shingled Roof? Tips from a Local Roofing Contractor

Asphalt ShinglesOver 70 percent of the residential buildings in the country are covered with asphalt shingles according to state authorities. That’s not a big surprise though. Asphalt shingles are lightweight, durable and pretty inexpensive. Actually, asphalt shingles are one of the most affordable roofing materials on the market. So, it’s pretty easy to guess why they are so popular. Sadly, they can get damaged by a wide variety of negative influences. That’s why we have decided to give you a couple of tips for dealing with shingle problems.

  • First, you need to find out if you have any roofing problems and locate the source of the trouble. If you notice a leak in your home, follow that leak, and look for the place where the water is coming through. You should be able to see some signs of deterioration on your roof. If possible, avoid climbing it because it’s dangerous. Inspect the roof from the ground and call a roofing contractor.
  • If you have some skills in roofing, just locate the damaged area and get on the roof. As an expert roofing contractor, I recommend you to use precautions and safety gear. However, if the roof is wet, don’t rush to climb it. It could be slippery, and you could hurt yourself.
  • Once you locate the damaged area, there may be shingles that are damaged, missing, cracked, or broken. So, you may need to replace them. Also, if you notice that any of the shingles have started to lift up and their nails have started to pop out, then you need to hammer them back down again. Otherwise, the next wind storm could blow them away.
  • To replace damaged shingles, you need to lift up the upper ones and remove the nails that hold them in place. After that, you have to remove the shingles and clean the area under them. Scrape the old roofing cement off, and apply a fresh coat of adhesive. After that, simply slide the new shingles in and nail them to the roofing construction.
